A captivating art exhibit has taken center stage at The Sanibel Captiva Trust Company’s Bell Tower office. “Not Forgotten Faces,” a traveling collection of photographic portraits showcasing the inspiring campers from Trailways Camps, is now open to the public through Friday, Jan. 31.
The art exhibit aims to highlight the often-overlooked population of adults with special needs, reminding us that the individuals in the photographs are equally important. Photos were captured by camp volunteer and photographer George Waters.
Trailways Camps was started locally by then Sanibel residents Sharon and Jerry Miller in 2012 to honor their sons, Robert and Benjamin, who were born with a rare disease resulting in physical disabilities. The nonprofit organization empowers adults with special needs, and those who care for them, to grow their social, emotional and spiritual relationships. Trailways offers a real three-night camping experience including campfires, arts and crafts and a talent show at their site in Alva. Evidenced by their long wait list to attend a camp, Trailways Camps supports those who are many times passed over or disregarded in society. They have held more than 30 camps to date.
The Sanibel Captiva Trust Company is a supporter of Trailways Camps and their important mission and is kicking off the “Not Forgotten Faces” traveling exhibit.
“It is our privilege and pleasure to be a part of this exhibit from Trailways Camps,” said Sanibel Captiva Trust Company Founder and Chairman S. Albert D. Hanser. “We’re thrilled to present the work that features the individuals who have benefited greatly from the camp experience.”
“Not Forgotten Faces” will travel to various businesses in Southwest Florida through the spring.
Additionally, The Trust Company will be sponsoring the Trailways Camps Inaugural Charity Golf Tournament, which will take place on Monday, March 24 at the Shell Point Golf Club, 17500 On Par Blvd. in Fort Myers.
