Community leaders break ground on Legacy Point 

The Housing Authority of the City of Fort Myers’s nonprofit development arm, Southwest Florida Housing Foundation, broke ground on Legacy Point, a 373-unit modern, mixed-income community that will replace the former Southward Village. Legacy Point marks a major step in the progression of The Greater Dunbar Initiative that sparks a large-scale revitalization aimed at providing affordable and workforce housing units for residents while expanding choices, creating market-rate amenities and adding new mixed-income housing to create a resilient and healthy neighborhood moving forward.

Immokalee nonprofit celebrates construction kickoff 

The Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance hosted a community event celebrating the start of construction on Parker’s Place Community Center, an important milestone in the development of a comprehensive community to provide safe, affordable housing for families in Immokalee. At completion, the community will include 128 rental units across eight buildings, along with a community center that will house early learning and afterschool activities for children, as well as educational and enrichment activities for adults.

Airport takes new approach to mitigate noise 

Naples Airport extended its efforts to be a good neighbor by completing another initiative designed to enhance safety, increase efficiency and reduce noise. Following FAA approval, arriving aircraft will now descend at a steeper slope while airplanes in holding patterns will fly at higher altitudes and over less populated areas. The flight modifications are expected to help mitigate aviation noise.

Chocolatier refreshes a confection sensation  

Norman Love Confections reimagined its Signature Collection – the first update in two years – to include 10 bold new creations that will accompany 15 classics. The new confections include Caramel Passion, German Chocolate Cake, Mango, Creme Brulee, Bittersweet Chocolate, Chocolate Dipped Cherry, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Hazelnut Praline, Lemon Truffle and Sicilian Pistachio. The 25-piece signature gift box set is available for $66.

Child Care provider rises to meet demand 

A growing partnership between Child Care of Southwest Florida and The School District of Lee County has resulted in additional opportunities for families to register their children in high-quality, affordable early learning programs. The nonprofit opened school-based learning centers at several public schools in Lee County, with teachers, administrations and school support staff having priority registration.

Foodies dine in droves to support a good cause 

In a generous display of community spirit and culinary excellence, Sizzle Dining wrapped up its most successful “dine with purpose” event to date. When all was said and done, 127 participating restaurants sold 87,483 meals and more than 8,000 Sizzle cocktails, with $1 from every meal sold going to help Blessings in a Backpack of Southwest Florida, a non-profit organization that provides nutritional food to food insecure elementary students every Friday throughout the school year.

  • The Community Foundation celebrated local nonprofit organizations and their leaders at a recent event, issuing awards to the following client partners:
