Lung Cancer Research Council hosts fifth annual SW Florida 5K Run/Walk Nov. 4

The Lung Cancer Research Council will host its fifth annual SW Florida 5K Run/Walk and Mile of Memories Memorial Walk on Nov. 4 at the Charlotte Sports Park, located at 2300 El Jobean Rd. in Port Charlotte. Raising awareness and support for those who have been affected by lung cancer, the event will benefit the Lung Cancer Research Council programs that promote lung cancer screening and early detection. The event is presented by South Florida Ford, and Millennium Physician Group is a silver sponsor.

Check-in begins at 6 a.m. with the competitive and non-competitive 5K Run/Walk and the Mile of Memories Memorial Walk commencing at 8:15 a.m. Following the walk, the morning will conclude with a rally and awards presentation.

According to Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, tobacco use can begin by the time children graduate from high school, and sixth and seventh grades appear to be the peak years for children to first try smoking. In order to bring awareness to middle school students on the dangers of smoking and other tobacco use, the Lung Cancer Research Council has invited four local middle schools to participate in a contest to design the event T-shirt. Participating schools include L.A. Ainger Middle School, Punta Gorda Middle School, Port Charlotte Middle School and Murdock Middle School. Furthermore, Charlotte County elementary and middle school students are invited to run or walk in an untimed race or the Mile of Memories Memorial Walk at no cost.

“We are excited to present our fifth annual event, dedicated to raising awareness, celebrating our triumphs and honoring our loved ones,” said Thomas Cappiello, lung cancer survivor and founder of the Lung Cancer Research Council. “The community comes together in a big way each year for the SW Florida 5K Run/Walk, and we are looking forward to making a great impact on the fight against lung cancer.”

Registration for the competitive and non-competitive 5K Run/Walk is $25 for ages 19 and up, $15 for ages 14-18 and free for 13 years and under. Registration for the Mile of Memories Memorial Walk is $25 for ages 19 and up and free for participants 18 years and under. Online or mail-in event registration is available through Nov. 1. Registration will increase by $5 for participants ages 14 and up if registering on event day. All online and mail-in registrants are guaranteed an event T-shirt and goody bag. A limited quantity of T-shirts and goody bags will be available for those registering on event day.

Memorial and corporate support signs are available for purchase on the SW Florida 5K Run/Walk and Mile of Memories Memorial Walk website, and will be displayed along the finishing quarter mile. Many participants choose to dedicate a sign along the Mile of Memories for $25 in honor of a loved one, representing those who cannot share in the event. Businesses may also purchase corporate signs to demonstrate their support. A second sign is provided to corporate supporters to display at their place of business.

Now entering its fifth year, the SW Florida 5K Run/Walk and Mile of Memories Memorial Walk has raised $250,000 to benefit programs that generate awareness and understanding about lung cancer and promote screening and early detection in an effort to save lives right here in Southwest Florida.
