Lee County to host USA Badminton’s 2016 U.S. Masters Championships Sept. 14-17

lcs-wLee County Sports Development announces that Lee County will host USA Badminton’s 2016 U.S. Masters Championships from Wednesday, Sept. 14, to Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Estero Community Park Recreation Center, 9200 Corkscrew Palms Blvd., Estero. The four-day tournament will showcase a variety of events, including men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles, with brackets ranging between ages 35-plus and 80-plus.

The championship is anticipated to bring 140 participants to the Estero area from six countries, including, as well as players from 10 different U.S. states. The event is expected to attract more than 350 sports visitors to Lee County, resulting in more than 400 hotel room nights. The U.S. Masters National Badminton Championships was last held in Estero in 2013, prior to the tournament going international.

“The 2016 U.S. Masters Championships is a great example of the many unique sporting events that are being hosted by Lee County,” said Jeff Mielke, executive director of Lee County Sports Development. “The tournament will bring players and fans from around the world to the Estero area, allowing visitors to experience all that Southwest Florida has to offer, and we are excited to bring another exciting competition for guests and residents to enjoy.”

Lee County Sports Development was created in 2003 to meet the growing demand for sports development in Lee County, and is recognized by the Florida Sports Foundation as one of the state’s 25 Regional Sports Commissions. The Lee County Sports Development office leads the recruitment and implementation of amateur and professional sports events and activities in Lee County, with the goal of providing economic impact to Lee County.
