Lee BIA Builders Care, LCEC collaborate on beautification project for Fort Myers couple

Lee BIA Builders Care and LCEC recently partnered on a landscaping and lawn cleanup project for a local elderly and disabled couple in Fort Myers.

Richard Woodruff has spent a lifetime working hard and caring for others. After retiring from his 42-year career as an electric services line foreman, his greatest commitment remains to his wife of 67 years. She is a home hospice patient and has become fully dependent on her husband for daily care.

Over the past 25 years, the couple has accumulated unwanted items in their yard that they needed help sorting through. In a matter of hours, more than a dozen LCEC volunteers were able to help clean up the unwanted items, pressure wash the home and driveway, pull weeds from the front of the home and trim all the overgrown grass in their backyard. Coastal Waste and Devoted Restoration also helped support this project, providing a 30-yard dumpster and an industrial pressure washer.

“It’s a blessing to be able to lend a hand,” said Kennedy Van Dyke, public relations specialist for LCEC. “Helping a local retiree in the industry and making a difference in the community is part of the LCEC core principles; we show up for those that need support where we work, live and play.”

“We are so grateful for our LCEC volunteers, as well as Coastal Waste and Devoted Restoration for supporting this project,” said Audra McKinney, client services and projects manager at Lee BIA Builders Care. “This project was completed the week of Richard’s 90th birthday, so it was very special to give him the gift of having his yard and home transformed. We hope that Richard and his wife can now live more comfortably and enjoy their newfound space in their backyard.”

Since 2005, Lee BIA Builders Care has helped nearly 500 individuals and families by providing A/C repairs, wheelchair ramps, roof replacements, remodeling projects and other critical repairs that allow deserving elderly and/or disabled homeowners, and their families, to live safely and comfortably in their own homes. Projects are made possible through generous donors and community partners who provide labor and materials to bring a project into reality.
