Fertilize smart during rainy season
Lee County’s Fertilize Smart campaign is fully activated, advising residents to avoid using nitrogen-rich and phosphorus-rich fertilizers on their lawns from June 1 through Sept. 30. During rainy season, improper and unnecessary fertilization can result in runoff that sends nutrients into local waterways. These excess nutrients can feed harmful algal blooms, resulting in negative impacts on county waterbodies, the Caloosahatchee and the Gulf.

In this science-based approach, biologists target adult female pythons, attempting to suppress python reproduction. Over 12 years, the team has stopped an additional 20,000 python eggs from hatching.
