The Housing Authority of the City of Fort Myers (HACFM) is leading relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian to serve residents of over 1,408 public and subsidized units and 2,400 vouchers in Fort Myers.

In the days following the storm, more than 50 of HACFM’s community supportive services and administrative staff went door-to-door to conduct wellness checks and document damage at HACFM units. Maintenance staff tended to immediate needs, including boarding and replacing 73 broken windows, tarping 110 roofs, repairing leaks at approximately 32 units, providing 48 AC unit repairs and collecting garbage at all HACFM properties.

Several community partners have worked alongside HACFM to provide relief services to residents. Representatives from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development’s Miami office provided resources and HACFM continues to distribute 500 meals and water daily at various distribution sites in partnership with the American Red Cross, World Central Kitchen and the National Guard. The Fort Myers Fire Department delivered water to several communities including Horizons Apartments, Bonair Towers and Royal Palm Towers.

“Our team remains committed to meeting the needs of our residents to ensure they have access to the resources they need during this difficult time and that any damage is quickly repaired following the storm,” said Marcia Davis, executive director of the Housing Authority of the City of Fort Myers. “I’m proud of our hardworking maintenance team, staff and incredible community partners who worked alongside our team to serve our Fort Myers communities.”

All HACFM properties have power and water restored. Staff are continuing to assess needs and plan to continue recovery efforts including cleaning of flooded areas, mitigating drywall damage, providing roofing repairs and clearing storm debris.
