Drone video elevates marketing, storytelling

Drone Video - Priority Marketing

Drone video offers businesses and nonprofits a unique visual perspective to tell their stories.

A generation ago, renting a helicopter or small airplane was the only way to capture overhead shots. Advances in technology, though, brought drones to the mainstream about a decade ago. Since then, technology has continued to improve as drones began capturing higher-resolution photos and videos. Meanwhile, government agencies began implementing some much-needed rules and regulations to cover drone usage.

Priority Marketing has offered limited drone video and drone photo capabilities for several years. However, the Fort Myers-based firm now maintains its own fleet of drones and employs two FAA-certified drone pilots capable of capturing content for a variety of platforms.

Use of drone video

For many years, the media have relied on aerial video to help tell news stories. Updates about weather, traffic, brush fires or construction were best told from the lens aboard a helicopter. Once drone technology became mainstream, news media quickly shifted to drones as a more economical means of gathering aerial videography and photography. Drones are cost effective and efficient when time is of the essence.

Today, anyone can purchase a recreational drone from a retail store or online marketplace. Recreational users don’t need a license, government permit or any formal training to purchase or operate a drone. Commercial drone users, however, must comply with more stringent guidelines. This applies to businesses and marketing agencies shooting drone videography or photography.

The U.S. Department of Transportation, through the Federal Aviation Administration, regulates the use of drones nationally. The FAA notes this statement in its introduction of Unmanned Aircraft Systems, aka drones:

The future of aviation is here. The FAA collaborates with industry and communities to advance drone operations and integrate them into the national airspace.”

The last part of that statement is especially noteworthy. Drones fly within the same airspace that commercial airlines, private jets, helicopters and other aircraft use. That’s why rules and regulations are important; safety is paramount.

Priority Marketing’s drone services

Priority Marketing currently owns and operates two drones manufactured by DJI, which is considered the global leader in civilian drones and innovative camera technology. The firm’s Avata 2 can travel up to 60 mph and capture 4K video with 30fps, 60fps or 100fps (frames per second). Meanwhile, its Mavic 3 Pro also captures 4K video and has a range of up to 17 miles.

Two team members at Priority Marketing have earned FAA Part 107 Certified Drone Pilot Status:

  • Marcus Finger, Videographer on Priority Marketing’s Creative Services Team.
  • Grace Hutchcraft, Social Media Manager on Priority Marketing’s Social Media Marketing Team.

Earning FAA certification allows commercial drone operators to fly at nighttime and in areas off-limits to recreational drone pilots, like over roadways, sporting events, parades and other gatherings. In areas near controlled airspace, certified drone operators can coordinate directly with the FAA for proper approvals.

Beyond the ability to operate drones, Priority Marketing’s in-house video production team provides concepting, scriptwriting, filming, directing, editing and production, animation, motion graphics and more for clients across a broad spectrum of industries, as well as nonprofit organizations.

Inspiration for drone video

Drones open up a world of possibilities for businesses and nonprofits seeking unique vantage points and angles to tell their stories. Video captured by drones can showcase a project’s scale, highlight assets of a location, demonstrate construction progress and impress target audiences.

Drone video, as well as drone photography, is ideal to capture these types of images:

  • Construction sites: commercial and residential developments
  • Environmental areas: beaches, preserves, wetlands, estuaries and rivers
  • Nature’s beauty: sunrises, sunsets, wildlife and natural landscapes
  • Roadways: traffic and construction progress
  • Special events: outdoor sports, parades, concerts and festivals
  • Golf courses: fairways, greens and manicured landscapes
  • Real estate: indoor and outdoor home tours

Drone video is suitable for use on television news, as well as social media, websites and streaming platforms. It also can be shown at galas and special events to bring stories to life in front of audiences who otherwise might not be exposed to that content.

Drones can capture flyovers and flythroughs to create modern, captivating videos that elevate storytelling capabilities. Below are examples of videos Priority Marketing produced that integrate drone video:

Frank Jenkins Custom Homes

Priority Marketing blended a series of video clips from the ground and air to showcase the luxury finishes, exceptional craftmanship and premium design for which the brand is known.

Healthcare Network

A single 2-second video clip from a drone is sometimes enough to help tell a story. Priority Marketing used a drone flyover of Healthcare Network’s new Nichols Community Health Center to introduce the provider’s health and wellness services.
